surely I’m not the only greenie in Colorado

Yesterday I stopped in Walgreens to pick up some more happy pills (buy one get one free too!). I had about 6 items and because I left my purse in the car and only grabbed my wallet, I didn’t have my reusable shopping bag.

I told the cashier that I didn’t need a bag, and she argued that I had a lot of things to carry. “That’s ok,” I told her, “I’m not a fan of plastic.”

“Oh, you must be from California.” She replied.

    that seems….mildly insulting, somehow.

i had a guy ask me if i needed a bag once, after he had already started pulling it out. i said no, no need to waste the plastic on my one little book. he looked at me funny, then threw the bag in the trash.

ugh! WHY DID YOU EVEN ASK ME?! ;P

People aren’t even phased here when I say no bag. In fact, a lot of places will ask if you want one if you only have a few items.
And I’m just about as far from CA as you can get!
    So there little walgreens guy!

if only everyone in california really did ask for NO plastic bags to be used!

So what did you say after that?

…and usually I’m flattered when people say “you must not be from here…” but I don’t think she meant it that way…

Ha! What does it say about my self-opinion as a native californian that I thought ‘what a b%$#!”

I’m reminded of you nearly every day since where I work one of the greyhounds is named Tangle, and she is the sweetest prettiest little girl.

Oh, this made me laugh! You should see the looks I get at our little grocery store when I ask them to use my bags…. but they’re getting used to it.

And ditto what Shawnee said… if only!

I had that same fight with a woman at the craft store just yesterday. Of course, I AM IN CALIFORNIA. So you know, it happens here as well.

Oh, you’re making me laugh! I lived in Texas when Philip was born and Andrea was 27 months. We used cloth diapers and I called myself a “back door ecologist,” because much of my greenness was built on poverty and necessity (we continue to use cloth napkins every meal – cheaper and less waste, the grey wash water goes back into the land). The people in Texas said they could TELL I WAS FROM COLORADO!!!!!!!!!

    Do you want a bag?

Please, NO, let’s save the plastic trees today.

I had a guy tell me he would need to have security escort me out when I refused a bag. I just said it was a good thing I had a reciept and walked away with my stuff.

  13. DIY a Reusable Bag | Tiny Choices

[…] Jenn gave a lovely run-down of some of the reusable bags available for purchase out there last week – so let’s piggy back on her reusable bags momentum: here’s a bunch of bags that you can make at home easily – and even better, from repurposed materials! You can reduce AND reuse, in one graceful solution! And when you use your own reusable bags, you know, sometimes people think you’re from California… […]
