wherein I do a stupid thing or breaking in the stove
So that roast that I had planned to cook last week… I just cooked it tonight. Or tried to cook it that is. The problem with cooking something in the oven for four hours is that you have to find four hours straight at home to cook. (This is a recipe where the crockpot just doesn’t do.)
So I forgot to get the roast in in time. And it was 4:30 and I really needed to cook the roast because it had been thawed for a few days. So I had the brilliant idea to cook it at a really high temperature… as high as my new stove would go – 500º. I thought I’d get a good sear on the roast before I added the wine/broth mixture to it. And 10 minutes into cooking, I poured the room temperature mixture over the roast and walked away.
Then the stove exploded. Or I should say that the pyrex casserole dish holding my roast exploded. There was a big bang followed by lots of red wine smelling steam and smoke. And I now get to test out the self clean function on my new stove. That is, after I shop vac all the tiny pieces of glass out of it.
And all I really wanted was to eat my roast…

I have done this, too. Blown up pyrex that is. In fact, I’ve done it twice! The first time was one of those pyrex pots that you can cook in. It was a gift from my mother and I was making veggies. Well, I started to hear something quite indescribable when the EXPLOSION took place. Hot, sharp pyrex all over the place. The second was a pyrex casserole dish. I took it out of the oven to cool when I started hearing the same noise. This time I knew what was going to happen so I backed up and BOOM…explosion two. I just hope no one got hurt!

To be read just like Phoebe from Friends says it… “Oh, no!”
Glad no one got hurt, and glad the oven seemed to be dealing with it okay… yikes.

Oh no! I got one of those little roaster for Christmas last year and I love it. That is what I cook my roast in. I hope the stove did a good job self-cleaning.

Holy Cow! Thank goodnes that you had already shut the door and walked away when it exploded! When I was little, I once blew up a pyrex bowl on the stove b/c I didn’t know that you couldn’t use glass on the stove…. ugh. Glass and melted marshmellows everywhere!

I just bought a couple cast iron, enamel coated pans off craigslist and am happy that from now on I can roast in that rather than pyrex. Especially after reading about your glass infused wine spattered roast.
Hopefully that cleaning function will work!

Ack! How scary! One time my over caught on fire (the element exploded) and it’s just not what you want to have happen when you are cooking dinner.

I thought it was just me. I once popped a pyrex baking dish while making a new, healthy pizza – complete with mushrooms. It was colored pyrex and shouldn’t be heated past 400 – then I poked the crust with a COLD fork to see if it was done – CRACK!
