Today Jim spoiled my surprise for his birthday. I had been saving up for an ipod, but he texted me from Target announcing they actually had a wii and I told him to just buy it. He always does this, just when I think I’m going to surprise him.
So we spent our few precious date hours tonight looking at video games… and new skillets. I SO need to buy new skillets the ones we’re using now have got to be past the point of healthy. I’m thinking I’ve got to figure out how to use cast iron and it sort of scares me. What I’d like is a couple 80 dollar Calphalon skillets from BB&B. What kind of skillets are you using?
Now I need to go peel my children away from their new game as it’s WAY past bedtime.

OH ALLISON!! Cast iron is THE BEST – its not hard either. If you want to know how to cure them properly and maintain them, let me know – that is ALL I COOK WITH!!! If you have a glass cook top you cant use them, but if you have a regular stove – GO FOR IT GIRL!!!!

You can use some cast iron on the glass tops. The lodge website tells which kinds. I had to prove this to my husband before I bought any.
I have a set of heavy kitchen aid pots and pans (no non stick coating) and a cast iron dutch oven and griddle. I opt for the ones that are not enamel coated for the extra iron in my diet. They aren’t hard to season.

cast iron skillets are so easy, and not scary at all! my one recommendation is to go to a camping and/or army supply store or something like because they sell their lodge cast iron skillets WAY cheaper than any other place. i just got a really nice one from home goods that had a tiny chip on the bottom but it was 60% off.

I have an enamel pot as well as cast iron. I love them both but you have to baby the enamel. It stains easily especially if you don’t want to use the bleach variety of soft scrub and you can’t use it if it chips on the inside. I do have to say, BB and Beyond is amazing about taking stuff back, I didn’t even need a receipt when I had a problem with my first enamel pot (a problem with manufacturing). It was a calphalon and I just exchanged it for the same model. No problems this time! You can find really great, already seasoned cast iron at flea markets. I personally hate seasoning new cast iron…it never turns out as nice as the pots that are about 20 years old!

Yep, cast iron, good thing. It works well on a wood stove and on an electric hot plate. I just don’t like it for fried rice. Sounds like plenty of others can give you tips.

I’m loving my stainless skillets. I grew up using nonstick and was a little scared of non-nonstick, but we finally invested in some Alclad and I have no more fear. Even if stuff does stick, you can scrub the living daylights out of the pans, no problem.
I really like cast iron for some stuff. We have a griddle that we really like. Again, I don’t think that there’s that much of a learning curve just as long as you know not to scrub them with soap. Plus you can “cheat” and buy preseasoned cast iron these days.

I bought Bialetti skillets at Target, and I absolutely love them. Anything Italian has gotta be good!

I thought my husband was crazy when he suggested buying cast iron skillets- but we use them almost exclusively! Lodge brand…
